How to take better product photos with your phone

6 min readΒ·BeginnerΒ·7 steps

What you'll learn

  • β†’Why window light beats any ring light
  • β†’The diffuser trick (under $5)
  • β†’Phone camera settings to change
  • β†’Free editing apps that finish the job

Before you start

  • β–‘A smartphone from the last 3 years
  • β–‘Natural light access

You don't need a DSLR. Modern phone cameras + window light + a free editor will produce shots good enough for Instagram, Amazon, and your website.

The steps

  1. Step 01

Shoot near a window during 'golden hour'

An hour after sunrise or before sunset. Soft, directional, free.

  2. Step 02

Diffuse harsh light with a white sheet

A bedsheet over a sunny window = $500 softbox. Photographers' biggest secret.

  3. Step 03

Turn off your phone's auto-HDR for products

HDR can flatten color. For product, manual exposure or pro mode wins.

  4. Step 04

Shoot at 1x or 2x β€” never digital zoom

Digital zoom destroys quality. Move closer instead.

  5. Step 05

    Use the rule of thirds

Turn on grid. Place subject on an intersection, not dead center.

  6. Step 06

    Edit in Lightroom Mobile (free)

Adjust exposure, contrast, white balance. Don't over-edit. Save a preset for consistency.

  7. Step 07

    Shoot in batches

Set up once, photograph 10 products. Consistent lighting across your feed.

Common questions

+iPhone or Android?

Both are excellent now. Don't upgrade for photos.

+Do I need a ring light?

Rarely β€” natural light is better.

+Should I shoot in RAW?

Only if you'll edit in Lightroom. Otherwise HEIC/JPEG is fine.

+What about background?

White foam board from any craft store works for 99% of products.

+How do I get a pure white background?

Adjust exposure to +0.7 and use the levels tool in editing.
