What you'll learn

  • β†’How Facebook Recommendations differ from stars
  • β†’How to enable reviews on your Page
  • β†’Where to embed Recommendations as social proof
  • β†’How to ask without sounding salesy

Before you start

  • β–‘A Facebook Page (not a personal profile)
  • β–‘Admin access to the Page

Facebook quietly replaced star ratings with Recommendations β€” a yes/no thumbs-up system with a written component. The good news: Recommendations show up in Marketplace, Search, and friends' feeds, making them more social than Google reviews. Here's how to play the new system.

The steps

  1. Step 01

    Enable Reviews/Recommendations on your Page

Go to Page Settings β†’ Templates and Tabs β†’ make sure 'Reviews' is enabled and visible. Without this step, customers literally cannot review you.

Common mistakeAssuming the tab is on by default. New Pages often ship with it disabled.
  2. Step 02

Write a compelling Page description with keywords

Reviews surface in search. A Page with 'best wood-fired pizza in Austin' in the bio will pull better recommendations than a generic 'Italian restaurant'.

  3. Step 03

Ask after a positive in-person moment

When a customer compliments you in real life, say: 'You just made my day β€” would you mind sharing that on our Facebook page? Takes 30 seconds.' Most will.

  4. Step 04

Send a single Messenger broadcast (if allowed)

If customers messaged you in the last 24 hours, you can reply with a thank-you and a soft review ask. Outside that window, you can't broadcast.

Common mistakeMass-messaging unrelated followers. Facebook will rate-limit your Page.
  5. Step 05

Embed top recommendations on your website

Use Facebook's embed code to pull 3–5 best recommendations onto your homepage. Social proof from a recognizable platform converts.

  6. Step 06

    Cross-share to your personal network

Ask your personal friends to recommend the business once. These show up to their friends' friends β€” huge organic reach.

Common questions

+Why don't I see star ratings anymore?

Facebook deprecated stars in 2018 in favor of Recommendations. Old star ratings still count toward your historical score.

+Can I delete a bad recommendation?

Only if it violates Facebook's Community Standards. Otherwise, respond publicly and move on.

+Do Facebook reviews help Google SEO?

Indirectly β€” they create backlinks and social signals, but they don't show up in Google reviews.

+How many recommendations do I need?

20+ is the threshold where social proof kicks in for most browsers.

+Can I incentivize recommendations?

Facebook is less strict than Google but still prohibits incentivized reviews. Reward the action of reviewing, not the rating.
