An Instagram Business account is free and unlocks insights, contact buttons, ads, and shopping. Switching takes five minutes. Here's the full setup with the configuration most owners miss.
The steps
- Step 01
Open Settings and switch account type
Profile β menu β Settings and privacy β Account type and tools β Switch to professional account. Pick 'Business' (not Creator) for most small businesses.
TipCreator is for personal-brand influencers. Business is for shops, services, restaurants. - Step 02
Choose a category that customers search
Pick the closest match β 'Coffee shop', 'Hair salon', 'Fitness trainer'. This affects discovery.
Common mistakePicking 'Public figure' or 'Brand' generically. Specific categories rank better. - Step 03

Tap Edit profile β Contact options. Add phone, email, and address. These become tappable buttons on your profile.
- Step 04
Link to a Facebook Page
Required if you want to run Meta ads. Settings β Linked accounts β Facebook. Create a Page if you don't have one.
- Step 05
Optimize your bio for search
Bios are now keyword-searchable. Lead with what you do and where: 'Wood-fired pizza Β· East Austin Β· Open 5β10pm'.
- Step 06
Add a link-in-bio tool
Use Linktree, Beacons, or build your own to send people to menu, booking, reviews. One link = many destinations.
- Step 07

Tap Insights at the top of your profile. You should see reach, impressions, and audience demographics within 24 hours.
